Book: The Mayhugh Family Genealogy, compiled by Geraldine Hemp Mayhugh and Ruth
Margaret Mayhugh Burnett; Macom, Illinois 1983
Geri Mayhugh has compiled a book called The Mayhugh Family Genealogy, that covers all
Mayhughs known of in 1983. There is no Houstin found in any census, marriage, etc. and I feel
that this name is WRONG.
Bryan Mayhugh, born 10 Oct 1756 in Lynchburg County, Virginia married Anne Dorsey
on 15 Apr 1782. They had 8 children including one named Perrigin born 1784 in Prince George's Co,
Maryland (just 10 years off from the date given in the Nodaway Co, MO History; and one named
Fielding (he was the administrator of his father's estate in Nicholas Co, KY on 7 May 1836...was he
a lawyer? did he beat the others out of their part? or did he merely do his job of paying all the
debts and then distributing whatever was left? The Mayhugh book p94-5 shows that Fielding, as
administrator of his father's will, paid himself for several things, and others too, leaving only $123.52,
and then Fielding claimed that Bryan mortgaged to him several slaves, and so he was due $200 from
the estate.
Sounds like there was nothing left for the other children, and they may well
have thought that "he beat them all out of their part"!! It fits!!)
p1 Family tradition states that Bryan Mayhugh was born near Lynchburg, Virginia, the son
of Timothy and Catherine Mayhugh. No documents have been found to confirm Bryan's birthplace.
p3 the earliest record found on Bryan Mahugh was his enlistment into the 11th Battalion, Prince
George's Co, MD on 5 Aug 1776 for service in the Revolutionary War. He enlisted under Alexander
Howard Magruder and reviewed by Col. Joseph Sims. On the same muster roll was a William Mayhew.
p3 Bryan Mayhugh first married Ann Conley on June 19, 1779. children?
On April 15, 1782 Bryan married Anne Dorsey, the dau of James Dorsey of Calvert Co, Maryland.

.
p.4 of Mayhugh Genealogy Bryan left Maryland and moved to Frederick Co, VA and signed an oath
there on 17 Dec 1794, and a similar one there on 11 Mar 1796.
"I Bryan Mahew do swear that my removal to the state of Virginia was with no intention to evade the
Act for preventing the further importation of Slaves within this Commonwealth, nor have I brought with me
or will cause to be brought any slaves with an intention of selling them, nor have any of the slaves now in
my possession been immported from Africa or any of the West India Islands since the first day of Nov 1778."
A bill of sale dated 3 Oct 1793 lists Brian T. Mayhew, Planter of Prince George's County...."
P.5 It appears that Bryan and family went from Prince George's Co, MD up the Potomac River to
Berkeley Co, West Virginia.
Probably followed the National Road to Wheeling, W VA, located on the Ohio River southwest of
Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Wheeling was a major hub of activity and a port where settlers could hire a riverboat to transport them to the frontier. As the Ohio river meandered along the border of Ohio, many settlers left the river and pushed into Ohio for their bounty lands and their futures. Bryan and family probably got off at Maysville, Ky,
"the greatedt shipping port on the Ohio below Pittsburg", traveling south to Fleming Co (1814)
and later to Nicholas Co, KY.
[where he died 4 July 1833; his will is recorded at Nicholas Co; buried in Fleming Co, Ky]
Bryan was in the Revolutionary War and likely went to Kentucky for his bounty land.

Grandma called him Perry Bryce - Perrigin Bryan? Our Perrigin died in 1823.
Bryan did not list his son Perrigin in his will. Maybe because he was dead?
The tombstone has a base 3 feet square. The 4-sided monument is 7 feet tall, tapering
to 6 inches at the top. Both are buried in the Old Poplar Run Cemetery west of Cowan, Fleming Co, KY.
